SOUTHLAKE – The prestigious Southlake Carroll Invitational brought several state-ranked cross-country teams from across the state and Arkansas and Oklahoma to Bob Jones Park at the crack of dawn last Saturday morning for one of the largest meets of the regular season in the Dallas area.
The meet proved to be an overwhelming success for the Pirates and Raiders with Wylie East setting two new school records.
Sophomore Evangeline Williams, who moved back to Wylie this past summer after a standout freshman season at Trabuco Hills (Calif.) in which she ran the second-fastest time in the nation in the 1,600-meter run, obliterated Wylie East’s previous school record in girls 5-kilometer cross-country. She placed third at Southlake Carroll with a time of 17:36, which was 41 seconds faster than the previous school record of 18:17.
Kaleab Endale, also a sophomore, broke the boys’ school record after he placed 59th in the boys’ 5-kilometer varsity elite race with a time of 15:53, toppling the old school record time of 15:55.
Overall, it was a solid day for Wylie East at Southlake – especially on the boys’ side, as all eight Raiders completed the race in less than 18 minutes. Senior Kirubel Feyissa turned in the second-fastest time for Wylie East, capturing 89th place with a 16:06. John Middleton, also a senior, placed 120th in 16:14. Senior Carter Roberts took 127th in 16:15. Jaden Parish, a sophomore, finished 159th in 16:29, followed by senior Nathnael Kedebe, who placed 160th in 16:31. Senior Roman Lopez clocked a time of 16:44, good for 175th place. Freshman Fraol Endale placed 201st with a 17:19.
On the girls’ side, both Williams and senior Madison Akers clocked sub-20-minute times. Akers, last year’s District 9-6A champion, placed 46th with a 19:04. Sophomore Isabelle Price ran to 110th place in 20:29. Senior Layla Talbott placed 147th in 21:14. Junior Addison Ziem finished in 156th place in 21:43.
Wylie didn’t break any school records on Saturday, but freshman Anmabelle Angeles posted the fourth-fastest 5K time in school history after she ran to 61st place in 19:34, and senior Kinsley Ferguson is now ranked No. 10 in school history after she placed 104th in 20:23 at Southlake.
Also in the girls’ varsity elite race, junior Alexis Lee placed 121st in 20:41, senior Kyler Eiben took 135th in 21:02, freshman Tesnin Idris was 139th in 21:08, senior Paige Orr was 142nd in 21:10 and freshman Kyndell Bacon ran to 162ndplace with a 21:53.
Wylie ran its entire team for the first time this season.
On the boys’ side, senior Zachary Brumfield impressed in his first race of the season, running to 34th place with a time of 15:42. Senior Caden Zurita, who placed 103rd in 16:10, bested his previous personal record by one minute. Thorne Owen, also a senior, finished just one second behind Zurita, placing 107th in 16:11. Sophomore Karter Kekuna bested his PR by 90 seconds. He ran to 170th place with a 16:40.9, followed by freshman Luke Boruk (171st, 16:42), who also set a new personal record. Junior Jaron Savage placed 182nd with a 16:50. Senior Michael Gonzales took 206th in 17:49. Junior Lincoln Shumard placed 208th in 17:54.
