Wylie junior middle hitter Julia Hudgins has been a big weapon for the Lady Pirates’ volleyball team, and she continued her dominant ways Tuesday.
Hudgins recorded 16 kills on 27 attempts for a .519 hitting percentage, leading Wylie to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-20) victory against Lakeview Centennial on Tuesday.
It was the eighth time this season that Hudgins has finished a match with a least 10 kills.
As a team, Wylie (9-9 overall, 2-0 District 9-6A) logged 42 kills on the night and had a .391 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Keelyn Green added 10 kills, complemented by five kills from junior middle hitter Aubrey DeGrate. Senior Livian Nesbit had a strong effort behind the service line, finishing the night with a team-high seven service aces. Senior Mallory Kendrick had seven digs to pace Wylie’s defensive efforts. Sophomore Berkeley Weidinger dished out 14 assists.
Last weekend, Wylie turned in a strong showing at the Allen Texas Open, collecting a 4-3 record to finish in ninth place overall.
The Lady Pirates opened Friday with straight-set victories over Covenant School (25-15, 25-7) and Rock Hill (26-24, 25-23) before falling to Keller (26-24, 25-21). They lost to North Forney (25-21, 26-24) to begin play Saturday in the championship bracket, but respond with wins against Waco Midway (29-27, 12-25, 25-22) and Frisco Lone Star (25-27, 25-19, 25-21) before losing to Plano (25-21, 25-15) in their final match of the tournament.
Wylie’s attack was paced by DeGrate with 28 kills, Green with 48 kills, Hudgins with 55 kills, and Stade with 33 kills.
