Student-athletes at Wylie High School have made a big impact over the years.

With the start of the fall sports season for the 2025-26 school year less than a month away, The Wylie News takes a look at the top returners expected to play a major role for their respective teams.

Aubrey DeGrate, Jr., Volleyball
DeGrate has been a force in the middle of the front row for the Lady Pirates.

Named District 9-6A Blocker of the Year as a sophomore, DeGrate recorded a team-high 82 blocks and 186 kills, helping lead Wylie to a share of the district title and a berth in the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals.

A few weeks ago, DeGrate and her club team, Madfrog 16U National Team, won the national title in the Open 16U Division at the 2025 USA Volleyball Girls National Championship.

Ava Cook, Sr., Softball

Cook provided a big source of power for a Pirates team that hit 48 home runs, earned a share of the District 9-6A title and finished the season as a regional semifinalist.

In her first full season playing varsity softball for Wylie, Cook, a right fielder, set the tables at the top of the Pirates’ batting order. She recorded 18 home runs – one short of tying Mary Stephens’ single-season record of 19 home runs – batted .512, racked up 62 hits and had 20 stolen bases. Defensively, she committed one error in 113 chances for a .991 fielding percentage and turned seven double plays.

Cook was named the most valuable player of District 9-6A, earned a spot on the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 6A Super Elite Team and later earned recognition on the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State Team.

Camden Love, Sr., Boys Basketball / Track and Field
Love was one of the top reserves for the Wylie boys basketball team last season and is expected to take on a larger role this year after the graduation of all five starters. Wylie won the District 9-6A title for the third straight year and reached the area round of the playoffs.

In track and field, Love had a standout junior season. He set the school record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.02 seconds and joined Aaron Lewis, Erik Pope and Zachary Brumfield to break the school record in the 4×400-meter relay (3:19.52).

Daylon Gordon, Jr., Football
An elusive back who can both break off long runs and catch passes out of the backfield, Gordon quickly emerged as Wylie’s feature running back — with a future that looks bright both in high school and beyond.

As a sophomore, Gordon was named District 9-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year after rushing for a team-high 966 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He currently holds nine Division I offers and is ranked as the sixth-best running back in Texas by Texas Top Talent.

Logan Montgomery, Sr., Boys Soccer
Two years ago, Montgomery switched positions to help make Wylie’s offense more dynamic — and it’s paid off.

He has been named District 9-6A Offensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons, leading Wylie to a district championship as a sophomore and a return to the playoffs last season. As a junior, he scored five goals and recorded three assists.

Melissa Gonzalez, Sr., Girls Soccer
Opponents struggled to score on a stingy Lady Pirates defense last season, which gave up just six goals all year on the way to its first district title in three years and an area-round finish.

Gonzalez, named to the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches Class 6A All-State Second Team, played a key role by recording 17 shutouts.

Ronelyse Hartfield, Jr., Girls Basketball / Soccer / Track and Field
A standout in three sports, Hartfield is coming off a strong sophomore season.

She earned second-team All-District 9-6A honors in both basketball and soccer, scoring seven goals and providing six assists.

On the track, Hartfield was a regional qualifier in both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Wylie’s 4×200 squad broke the school record twice this year, including at the Area 9-6A/10-6A meet.

Serina Armendariz, So., Girls Golf
Armendariz brought poise and consistency to the course during her freshman season, helping the Lady Pirates win their third straight district title and qualify for the state tournament for the first time in program history.

Armendariz won the District 9-6A individual title with a score of 147, and two weeks later, she defeated Klein Oak’s Anjali Nair in a two-hole playoff to claim first at the Region II-6A Tournament.

Zachary Brumfield, Sr., Cross Country/Track and Field

Brumfield has already become one of the top long-distance runners to have ever competed for Wylie, and he will look to continue his dominant ways.

As a junior, Brumfield finished in sixth place at the Region II-6A meet with a time of 15 minutes, 44.78 seconds. That performance came two weeks after he won the individual title at the district meet with a time of 16:03.

During the spring track and field season, he broke the Wylie ISD stadium record in the boys 800-meter run, capturing first place at the Area 9-6A/10-6A meet with a time of 1:54.77. The previous week at the District 9-6A meet, he won first place in the 800 and as one leg of Wylie’s boys 4×400-meter relay.
