End of an era: Taco Delite serves final customers

Customers yearning for one last taste of Taco Delite braved long lines both inside and out last week after longtime Wylie owners Melisa and Terry Greaves announced they were closing the beloved local restaurant.

The decision, shared via social media on Monday, July 21, triggered an emotional outpouring from the community and a surge of business so strong that the couple had to close a day earlier than planned.

“We knew people would come in and visit and say bye,” Melisa said. “But people are saying, ‘We’re eating here every single day until you guys are gone.’ When everybody’s doing that, it’s just beautiful, … it’s overwhelming and scary.”

For nearly four decades, Taco Delite served more than just tacos — it served as a place where families grew up, employees became family and customers made memories. Its closing marks the end of a chapter that began in 1987, when Melisa’s parents, Jim and Jane Smith, opened the Wylie location.

Her parents first started their Taco Delite journey in Garland in 1982, the same place where Melisa and Terry first met as teenagers. After a robbery occurred at that location, the family began looking for a new community to call home — and found it in Wylie.
