Raiders ready for showdown with Wakeland

by | Nov 1, 2021 | Latest, Sports

The Lady Raiders volleyball team advanced to the playoffs after their best campaign since 2018.

They closed the regular season against McKinney North Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Wylie East had already clinched third place in the district after beating Sherman the previous week. A victory over McKinney North would help build momentum going into the playoffs and allow Lovejoy to move ahead of the Lady Bulldogs for a district title.

Similar to their previous matchup: the Lady Raiders played a couple of very close sets, but were unable to avoid elimination, losing in a three set sweep.

East coach Lisa Curry is proud of her team’s accomplishments over the regular season, including strong performances against top teams in the district.

“I’m very pleased with how we fared,” Curry said. “I feel we could have taken a set or two from anyone this year. We’re making progress. The last couple of years we’ve taken fourth place, so we rose to the occasion this year.”

Wylie East opened the playoffs Tuesday, Nov. 2, against Frisco Wakeland. The contest will be held at McKinney High School at 6:30 p.m.

This season, the Wolverines (13-6, 21-13) finished second in the competitive Frisco district and hopes to contend for a long playoff run. Their best wins of the season include sweeps over Frisco Heritage and Lebanon Trail.

Curry said she’s excited to see her team perform in the playoffs.

“They’re going to be a tough match,” Curry said. “Our kids are going to have to come out and play their best. They have a good player outside, but so do we. It’s going to be tough, but I think we’re going to match up well.”
