Marcus Billingsley is quickly learning that nothing is free in a free throw competition. The 6th grade Harrison Intermediate student worked hard practicing regularly for the Texas Elks Free Throw Contest, where he placed second in the 10 to 11-year-old district.
“My dad helped me practice and I received lots of support from my mom,” Marcus said. “To prepare I practiced by myself at school and with my dad after school.” Additionally, Marcus plays with a PSA select basketball team.
Marcus won by making 21 out of 25 free throws at the Carrolton contest held Feb. 20. The contest included eight other district champions from across the state. The young athlete was just two baskets shy of first place and one basket ahead of the third place winner.
To reach this point, Marcus won the Wylie competition and the Northeast District Shoot-off. Next up is a competition where he will be a stand-by for the four state regional competition held March 20.
If he wins that competition, he will move on to the national finals in Chicago, Ill. April 16.
