The Wylie Police Department has asked the public for help as detectives investigate the fatal shooting of a teenager near Dodd Park.

Sgt. Donald English said officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16, to reports of shots fired on the northeast corner of Country Club Road and Park Boulevard.

“Multiple witnesses reported hearing several shots being fired and several males running in various directions,” English said.

Responding officers found 17-year-old, Ty’Ron Kuria of Wylie had sustained gunshot wounds, English said. Wylie Fire Rescue personnel provided life-saving measures at the scene before transporting the victim to a regional hospital.

“Despite all efforts by emergency personnel … Kuria was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the police spokesman said.

Kuria was a junior at the Wylie ISD Achieve Academy, Principal Janet Wyatt said in a message to students and their families.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Ty’Ron’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him,” Wyatt said. “Our hearts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”

She said counseling service was available, and additional counselors would be on campus to help students cope with the news.

“Grief can look different for every child, and we want to be sure each student has the support they need,” the principal said.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division were investigating and have requested that anyone with information should call the police department at 972-442-8171, English said.
