Small businesses continue to power the economic engine of North Texas, according to a newly released statewide report that highlights their impact on job creation, revenue, and community stability.
The 2025 Small Business Report, issued by the Texas Comptroller’s Office, shows the Metroplex region — which includes Collin, Dallas, Denton, Grayson, Rockwall, Tarrant and surrounding counties — is home to more than 1 million small businesses, representing 99% of all businesses in the area. Together, these firms employ more than 1.5 million people, or 42.6% of the region’s workforce.
The study underscores what many North Texans see every day: from family-owned shops on historic downtown squares to rapidly scaling tech firms, small businesses remain a stabilizing force within one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States.
In Collin County specifically, the strength of the small-business sector mirrors — and in many cases exceeds — regional trends. Cities such as Wylie, Sachse, Murphy, Plano and McKinney have seen significant growth in professional services, health care, construction and locally owned retail, contributing to the Metroplex’s more than 1 million small businesses and 1.5 million small-business employees.
