Smith Public Library welcomed 13 sweet-toothed 4 – 6th graders during last week’s Sushi and Sidekicks event. The program ran in conjunction with the summer reading “hero” theme.

Veronica McKay and Lindsay Beattie organized the event, where participants made sidekicks out of rocks, construction paper and marshmallows. Teen volunteers helped with glue guns and kids got creative with the supplies provided.

Sushi was made from licorice, marshmallows, candy and other sweets, looking significantly like real raw fish sushi.

Participants Leilani Makahilahila, Audrey Go and Hannah Rauch stood together working on their sushi and sidekicks, carefully wrapping their candy into perfect bite size treats.

Kate Russ, who attended with her twin brother AJ, enjoyed trying something new and being inventive.

For those who missed the event, there are many more hero themed programs scheduled for the remainder of summer.

July 13, Critterman will visit at 10 and 11 a.m. and at noon; Canvas Vandals will be held July 15 at 3 p.m.; Thursday July 16 will be Villains vs. Heroes Game day at 10 a.m., Breakdance Nerd Party at 3 pm. and Critterman at 3 p.m.; Magician Todd McKinney will visit July 21 at 10 and 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.; a jewelry making studio will be held at 3 p.m. July 22; David Slick and his Intimidating Tricks will visit at 10 a.m. July 23 and the End of Summer Party will be held at 3 p.m. on July 23.
