WaterMyYard.org helps homeowners to water only when needed

With the lifting of watering restrictions today, North Texas residents can now water their lawns up to two days per week. But most residents probably don’t need to! Instead, they can save money and time by signing up at WaterMyYard.org. This website provides people with customized recommendations on the best ways to keep a healthy lawn.

WaterMyYard.org’s service to North Texas residents is made possible by a partnership between the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service (AgriLife). WaterMyYard.org uses data from weather stations based throughout the NTMWD service area. These weather stations gather local climate conditions, including rainfall, temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and solar radiation. AgriLife analyzes the weather station data — along with each subscriber’s sprinkler system specifics — to formulate a customized irrigation recommendation.

“When it comes to how much to water your lawn and when, WaterMyYard.org takes the guesswork out of the equation,” said Denise Hickey, NTMWD Public Relations and Water Conservation Manager. “AgriLife’s science and weather-based technology helps homeowners determine when it’s necessary to turn on their sprinklers and when it’s better for their lawn to keep their sprinkler system turned off. An important part of keeping lawns healthy is to water only when needed and to use cycle-soak for greater saturation.”

Hickey continues, “Through our unified efforts, we can use water wisely and efficiently to sustain healthy lawns while continuing to protect our resources for the future.”
